The Santa
Barbara Adventure Company and the Great Whale-Watching Hunt
The nutrient rich water found between Santa Barbara and
the Channel Islands lends itself to many sightings of Humback
and Blue Whales during the summer months.
The Blue Whale is a hard one to miss! It is the biggest
and loudest animal on the planet--weighing up to 200 tons,
and measuring 80-90 feet in length. Blue whale calves put
on 200-300 pounds per day during their first months.
Humpback Whales aren't quite so large--weighing in at 25
to 40 tons, and 40 - 50 feet in length. One of their most
interesting traits is that they sing. The typical song lasts
from 10-20 minutes in length!
Although not as common, there's also the possibility of
spotting Orcas, Finback and Minke whales.
While we can't guarantee a whale sighting on one of our
kayak trips, the chances of seeing wildlife in the spring
and summer are great.
The Santa Barbara area is home to over 30 species of whales,
sea lions, seals and dolphins. And our kayak trips are a
great chance to witness them in their natural habitat.
Join us for a summer kayaking trip, and we'll do our best
to find and point out these amazing creatures. Our guides
love to discuss marine ecology!
Our Refugio to El Capitan kayaking adventure is a great
opportunity to spot marine life. We paddle right along the
kelp beds where the animals like to hide from predators.
Our kayaking trips include all kayaking equipment, thorough
instruction, an excellent lunch served on a secluded beach,
warm paddling gear, knowledgeable guides, and marine ecology.
