Hiring and Training Timeline:

January: Typically when we hire most of our new guides for the upcoming season

February: Training takes place over multiple days with topics ranging from customer service, risk management, to ocean kayaking skills. Locations range from our downtown Santa Barbara warehouse, the Santa Barbara Harbor, to Santa Cruz Island.

March – May: Our spring outdoor education season runs through rain or shine with both tent and cabin-based programs. New guides will have their own trail group of students with support from senior guides and a program coordinator. New guides will also complete shadow shifts on our public tours with senior guides to gain the skills necessary to run tours on their own.

June – August: We are sold-out almost daily with public day trips on both the mainland and the Channel Islands. Most guides are leading their own tours by now however we still run large trips that require multiple guides.

September – October: Our fall outdoor education runs for schools as they begin their new school year. The public tours quiet down around this time and guides who can lead multiple types of tours (kayaking, surf, wine…etc) often have more-consistent work from week to week.

We accept applications year round and typically hire for our upcoming season at the beginning of the year.
